Some of my favourite London evenings begin with no reservation at all, just a visit to one of the city’s food markets and a few carefully chosen ingredients to bring home for a cosy dine-in. Here are a few recommendations to the city's finest food halls and best neighbourhood markets.
Begin at the Borough Market
For the widest selection, it is difficult to beat Borough Market. Wander between its historic arches and pick up fresh sourdough, British cheese, seasonal fruit, charcuterie and a bottle of wine. There is no need to plan the menu too carefully, just see what catches your attention.
A Chelsea Food Walk
For something closer to South Kensington, I recommend Pavilion Road. This quiet Chelsea street brings together a greengrocer, bakery, cheesemonger, wine shop and fishmonger within a few steps of one another. Start with seasonal produce, add something from London Cheesemongers and choose a bottle of wine to enjoy alongside it.
On Saturdays, the nearby Duke of York Square Food Market is another lovely option, with independent stalls offering fresh produce, baked goods and dishes from around the world.
An Evening of Your Own
Back at the apartment, set everything out, open the windows and let dinner unfold slowly. It might be a simple plate of cheese, bread and fruit, or something discovered at the market and prepared in your own kitchen. For me, this is one of the quiet luxuries of an apartment stay: enjoying exceptional London food without having to leave the comfort of home.
