Grand museums, quiet garden squares and some of London’s most beautiful residential streets, South Kensington offers a gentler way to experience the capital and is one of our favourite parts of London. It brings together grand architecture, world-class museums and quiet residential streets, yet still feels relaxed enough to explore at your own pace.

Saturday

Morning:

I would begin Saturday with coffee around Bute Street before walking to the V&A. Rather than trying to see everything, choose a few galleries and leave time to appreciate the building itself. Afterwards, stop for lunch around Exhibition Road or Old Brompton Road, where there is an excellent mix of neighbourhood favourites and more refined restaurants.

Afternoon:

Spend the afternoon walking from the Albert Memorial into Kensington Gardens. The route towards Kensington Palace is particularly beautiful, passing tree-lined avenues, open lawns and elegant formal gardens. If time allows, continue to the Italian Gardens or pause at the Orangery for afternoon tea.

Evening:

For the evening, check the programme at the Royal Albert Hall as they often have some spaces left for their weekend performances. Even without a performance, however, the illuminated hall and surrounding Victorian architecture make this one of the loveliest evening walks in the area.

Sunday

Morning:

On Sunday, visit the Natural History Museum close to opening time, before the main crowds arrive. The museum’s terracotta façade and magnificent central hall are worth experiencing in their own right.

Afternoon & Evening:

Finish the weekend by browsing the bookshops, visiting a local bakery or seeing a film at Ciné Lumière. Our recommendation is to leave some space in the itinerary. South Kensington is best experienced slowly, allowing time to enjoy its gardens, architecture and quieter corners between the better-known landmarks.
